How to Create Enabling Environments at a Reggio Emilia Inspired Setting, for Ages 0-5

16 May 2025
The Environment Stage

Creating enabling environments is one of the cornerstones of the Reggio Emilia approach, where the physical space, or environment, plays a crucial role in fostering children's learning and development. Inspired by this approach to learning, this session will explore the principles and practices involved in designing, sourcing and setting up, as well as maintaining and beautifying, spaces which inspire curiosity, creativity, and exploration for children aged 0-5 years.

Participants will learn how to thoughtfully curate environments that are both practical and aesthetically engaging, supporting the idea that the environment is the "third teacher." Key topics will include the importance of natural materials, flexible layouts, languages of expression, and materials which spark awe and wonder, as well as strategies for organizing and maintaining environments that are responsive to children's needs and interests. Attendees will gain actionable insights on how to create spaces that invite children to interact, collaborate, and engage deeply with their surroundings in a way that nurtures their intellectual and emotional growth.
