Karen Boardman is the Head of Department for Early Years Education and the Director of the International Centre for Early Years Education at Edge Hill University.

Karen is a member of the Early Years Coalition and has worked on the Birth to Five Matters Non-Statutory Guidance for the EYFS (Early Education), leading on the mathematics section. Karen has also led on the ‘Playful learning from birth’ sections of Play Matters (Early Years Reviews) and literacy sections on the latest sector document School Readiness Matters – Embedded and Threaded Transitions (TACTYC).  

Karen is a published author. Her latest book ‘Early Literacy for Under-Fives’ (Sage) was shortlisted for the nomination of Nursery World Professional Book of the Year in 2025. Karen’s research is focused on literacy, play, provision for under-threes and research circles.
